Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 22

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes lev, liter, ortho, and magn, the suffix ic, and the roots herbi and nat.

PREFIXES

The prefix lev means “lift” or “light”. No doubt you have seen it in the word elevator.

The prefix liter means “letter”. A “man of letters” (or writer) may write literature.

The prefix ortho means “straight”. An orthopedic surgeon is concerned with the alignment of the bones.

The prefix magn means “great” or “large”. No doubt you used a magnifying glass as a child to better view small insects.

ROOTS

The root herbi means “grass” or “plant”. Have you had herbal tea before?

The root nat means “born”. Naturally, around Christmas time, there are many nativity scenes depicting the birth of Jesus.

SUFFIXES

The suffix ic means “like” or “having the nature of”. You have probably seen this suffix in words like catastrophic, dynastic and fantastic.
